Van Cortlandt House Museum The Van Cortlandt House Museum is a private, non-profit institution founded in 1896 by the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, a licensee of the City of New York. Van Cortlandt House was built in 1748 for Frederick Van Cortlandt and was the focal point of an expansive and prosperous wheat plantation. The interpretive period of the Museum House is from 1748 - 1823 when Frederick and his two eldest sons, James and Augustus, owned the property. The Museum collection contains Van Cortlandt family materials and furnishings appropriate to this interpretive period. Self-guided tours are available: Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Plan to arrive at least one-half (1/2) hour prior to the posted closing time so you may adequately see the Museum. School and Group Tour appointments are also available during these hours. Riverdale Equestrian Centre Riverdale Equestrian Centre was founded in 1994 by former Olympians Rusty Holzer and Ashley Nicoll and has since then grown into the New York metropolitan area’s premiere horseback riding facility. The Centre is located in Van Cortlandt Park at Broadway and W. 254th St.; just 15 minutes from Midtown Manhattan by car. It is also easily accessible by public transportation. The facility includes 4 outdoor riding rings, an Olympic-sized indoor arena and easy access to the trails of Van Cortlandt Park Lessons are offered year-round to riders of all ages and levels of ability. Other programs include therapeutic riding for the disabled, after-school riding groups and summer day camp. This past summer, 10 free concerts were offered on Sunday Afternoon with musical selections from George M. Cohan, J.S. Bach, Haydn, and various operatic stars. Many of these concerts are offered in the Rockwood Drive Circle in Van Cortlandt Park, located near Mosholu Avenue and Broadway. Throughout the year, the Bronx Arts Ensemble offers a number of special events for the public. Learn the fundamentals of the world's most popular sport in this instructional program for kids under 13. The program begins in mid-September. The Van Cortlandt Park Pool offers swimming instruction during the summer months on a first-come, first-serve basis, for ages 1-1/2 to 14. Classes run from the beginning of July to the end of August.
