Art Near the Park

During this series, art teacher Lucy Degidon will work with participants of all levels on various methods of art inspired by nature.  All workshops will be held on Mondays from 3:30 to 5:30pm in the Building 9 Community Room (on Gale Place off of Orloff Avenue.) Participants may sign up for all or just some of the workshops.

June 2nd- Wrap Up

Participants will be charge a small material fee of: $4/ adult for each workshop or $20 for all 6 or $2/senior or child (5-12 years old) for each workshop or $10 for all 6Free for members of the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park. John Muir Volunteer Day- Saturday May 10th from 10am-1pm

Join us as we continue to work on the John Muir Nature Trail.  Volunteers are needed to remove invasive plants and help plant native trees and shrubs. Meet at the Riding Stables.  Enter the park at Broadway and Mosholu Ave.

It's My Park Day!- Saturday May 17th from 10am-1pm

Join us as we clean up and beautify the park. Various projects around the park such as gardening, garbage cleanup, and trail work. Meet at the riding Stables, enter the park at Broadway and Mosholu Ave.

Teach Your Child to Ride A Bike- Saturday May 17th from 10am-1pm.

Take your kids to a free Bike New York class to learn the basics of biking in a safe, social setting.  Best of all there's no running behind the bike, strained backs, scrapedknees, or frayed nerves. Class offered in association with City of New York Parks & Recreation.  Open to children with their parents. Bikes and helmets required.  Pre-register at www.BikeNewYork.org/education/classes/teach_child.html.  Held at VC Stadium, enter the park at Broadway and W. 242ndStreet.

11th Annual John Muir Charity Golf Tournament-Friday, May 30, 2008

This annual event honors the Scottish born naturalist for whom the Van Cortlandt Park's 1.7 mile John Muir Nature Trail is named. Located in the Northwest Bronx, Van Cortlandt Park is the fourth largest New York City park (1,146 acres).  Proceeds from the event support the care of Van Cortlandt Park, its trails and horticulture, in part through the valuable experience of the summer youth employment.  Sponsored by the American Scottish Foundation, NYC Department of Park and Recration, Van Cortlandt Golf Course, Friends of Van Cortlandt Park and KIWI Club of New York, Inc..  For information, call (212) 605-0338 or email asf@wwbcny.com.

SEFRI Steward Training Session- Saturday June 7th from 2-4pm

May 10th Training has been canceled.

SEFRI Stewards help with the maintenance and inspection of our newly planted trees.  Each steward is trained with the skills to adopt a small section of the forst.  Stewards will be askedto care for a small plot of trees for two hours each month. Meet at the Southwest Corner of the Shandler Recreation Area parking lot. Enter the park off of Jerome Avenue, south of East 233rd St. Sponsored by the New York Community Trust.

Southeast Forest Project Volunteer Day- Saturday June 21st from 10am-1pm

Help to restore a section of the forest along the new Croton Extension Trail. We will be pulling invasive weeds and planting native plants. Meet at the Southwest Corner of the Shandler Recreation Area parking lot. Enter the park off of Jerome Avenue, south of East 233rd St. Sponsored by the New York Community Trust.
