Summer EcoCrafts
Tuesdays
July 7th – August 25th, from 11am to 2pm
Kids of all ages are invited to join us to make various EcoCrafts to take home. Make flowerpots, frames, collages, animal crafts and more, using natural and recycled materials. Children under 12 must have adult supervision. Will be held at Classic Playground- enter the Park at Van Cortlandt Park South and Gouverneur Avenue.
Freshwater Ecology
Monday August 10th from 11am-1pm
What lurks in Van Cortlandt Lake? Come grab a net and find out! Learn about the animals that call Van Cortlandt Lake home and how they are adapted to life in their freshwater habitat. Get artistic and draw what you find. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Van Cortlandt Lake- enter the park at Bailey Ave. and Van Cortlandt Park South.
Community Gardening
Wednesday August 12th from 11:30am-1pm
Whether you are an experienced gardener or just want to learn how your vegetables grow come and get your hands in the dirt with us as we plant our fall crops. Learn about compost and take some home to add a boost of nutrients to your own garden and houseplants, or simply admire the butterflies sure to be around our butterfly garden. All are welcome. Bring a container to take home compost. Meet at the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park Compost Site next to the Riding Stables; enter the park at Broadway and Mosholu Ave.
Project Wild Teacher Workshop
July 11th, 2009 from 11-2pm at
Friends office- 124 Gale Place Apt. GrA Bronx, NY
Project WILD provides lesson plans that will help students learn basic concepts about wildlife and their needs. Project WILD is an award-winning education program designed for teachers and youth leaders of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. $5 fee to cover the cost of lunch will be due at the workshop. Spread your blanket and enjoy classical music followed by fireworks on the Parade Ground. Enter the park at Broadway and West 246th Street.
Adventures in Time Summer History Camp
Monday through Friday August 10 – 4 and 17 – 21, 2009 10:00 am – 3:00 pm daily
Children ages 6 – 12 will spend their days immersed in the everyday life of the 18th century. While participating in hands-on activities such as enlisting in General Washington’s army to washing a pair of socks children will learn all while having fun. Admission fees vary; please call Van Cortlandt House Museum at 718-543-3344 for further information and an application package. Enrollment is limited to 15 campers per session.
